The church is believed
to originally have been built by the Romans around 400AD and was dedicated
to St.Martin Archbishop of Tours in France in the 4th Century..
The photograph on the
right shows the font at St.Martin's which is at the entrance to the church
as you walk in. Legend had it that this was the font that Augustine
baptised King Ethelbert in, but in fact it is pieces of stones which
probably came from the remains of Christ Church priory.
