The peaceful interior of St.Martin's double click for close up

Click on the thumbnail for a close up of the Altar. It is thought that this is where St.Augustine would have first celebrated Mass when he started living in Canterbury. It's an incredible place. You walk in and you can almost turn the clock back 1,400 years and imagine what it was like! It is a very peaceful place, you can feel the spirituality of the place.

Explore the picture above and see if you can find any 'hotspots' on it which will give you additional information on St.Martin's if you click on them.

The church is believed to originally have been built by the Romans around 400AD and was dedicated to St.Martin Archbishop of Tours in France in the 4th Century..

The photograph on the right shows the font at St.Martin's which is at the entrance to the church as you walk in. Legend had it that this was the font that Augustine baptised King Ethelbert in, but in fact it is pieces of stones which probably came from the remains of Christ Church priory.
